This piece is a follow on from a tweet that I put out earlier in the week. A view that some may agree with or not. I believe that we would not have reached 9 in a row without Scott Brown. Yes, others have made their contribution and played their part such as Sinclair, Dembele, Rogic, Edouard, Forrest and McGregor to name a few. Their skill set and attributes have been well received and rightly praised but for me they do not have what Brown has. A fight, desire, grit, and determination that has lifted us up and over the line, particularly in games when we have been poor. Challenging referees’ poor decisions and putting pressure on them before the next, quiet words of discouragement in opposing players ears and a cheeky wink and/or smile to opposing fans that causes them to self-combust. All this as well as being a very good footballer. Yes, he has had games where he has not been at his best, just like any other player throughout the world and on the few occasions that this has happened it tends to be the same for the whole team.
Brown is
that player who other fans love to hate.
An underhand compliment if ever there was one. Opposition players would love to have him in
their team. Standing shoulder to
shoulder, backing them up when the tough gets going and leading them through
difficult times. Managers too, would
love to have the luxury of having him in their squad and would most certainly
be the first name on their team sheet.
‘Rent Free’
is a common phrase banded about and for me Scott Brown is that very dweller
amongst oppositions fans and players.
They appear to obsess about him as he gets under their skin. Players and
managers appear to focus their attention on him and develop tactics around
outbattling and outwitting him to win the midfield and the game. For me, he is the master at gamesmanship and
with this ploy, the other flair players appear to get less of the attention and
can go about their role and do their business.
Yes, sometimes he does not always win the battle, but their gloating after
90 minutes usually comes back to haunt them as he inevitably wins the war.
Time waits
for no man and unfortunately at 35 years, his playing career is coming to an end. Is Brown’s better days behind him? Possibly, but he still has lots to offer this
season and perhaps more, but only if he is supported and managed well by Celtic
and Lennon. He still is a very good
player and vital to the team, but I think there has been an over reliance on
him of late, playing week in, week out when he could have been rested on occasions. Perhaps my views are also shared by Rodgers
and currently Lennon that he is so invaluable to the team and perhaps the
reason why he plays more often than not is because others are not capable of giving
to the team as he does.
In my opinion,
going forward, their needs to be less of a reliance upon Brown and some players
need to step up and do more of the dirty side of things and the rest such as
drive, fight, lead, encourage and win at all costs. Hopefully, this could allow us to have him
around for a few years more and be appreciated by the fans for a little longer
as being one of our most decorated player and captain.
Till the next time. Hail! Hail!
